Tensoku Ryu Nunchaku Shodan Kata

This first Nunchaku Kata focuses primarily on common spins and passes used in typical combinations. The Kata is performed in its entirety on the right side, and then repeated in its entirety on the left side. You should end up roughly in the same location on the floor or mat from where you began the Kata.

All of the passes, spins, wraps, and other maneuvers in this Kata are skills you have practiced earlier. If you are not completely familiar with all of these skills then you should revisit these skills until you are confident you can perform them each in a flawless manner. This Kata depends on your ability to do these skills successful and with little risk to yourself.

As always when learning something new with the Nunchaku begin exploring this Kata using a practice Nunchaku. Some of the movements in this Kata are notorious for causing inadvertent impacts to the skull, face, elbows, and shins. Take things slowing at first until you can assess where these potential dangers may be encountered. Begin to pick up speed only after you have done the Kata successfully a few dozen times. This level of practice will allow you to better appreciate where the weapon may “misbehave”, resulting in an unexpected impact.
