Tensoku Ryu Nunchaku Nidan Kata

The primary purpose of this Kata is to provide a series of movements that allow the student to practice continual flowing movements using the Nunchaku. If you are not yet familiar with the movements utilized in this Kata then you should review the various Nunchaku skills discussed in the Buki section of this Green Belt curriculum. The goal when practicing this Kata (after you have become accustomed to it) is to do all of the movements from beginning to end in one continuous flow of movement, devoid of any stoppage or pauses. This merely takes practice. It takes some time to become familiar with the sequence of movements, but once you have accomplished this level of memorization the Kata is simply a matter of repetitive practice until you are capable of doing it without disruption.

This does not mean you need to perform the Kata fast. Indeed, do the Kata slowly at first so that you can better appreciate how it flows. Only attempt to speed things up when you are quite practiced and familiar with the Kata .

Throughout this Kata movements are performed on one side and the repeated again on the opposite side. Some form of logical transition (usually some sequence of wraps and passes) provides a seamless way to flow from one side to the other. Some of these transitions can be difficult to do in a seamless and flowing manner initially, but then, the purpose of this Kata is to provide you with a mechanism via which you can practice and develop these skills.

Some of the movements in this Kata represent a risk of injury to various surfaces of your body, particularly your elbows, head, and shins. Do not practice the Kata with a hard weapon or at enhanced speeds until you are familiar with ways to avoid these potential risks. Knowing where these risks are found in the Kata will help you understand how to move and position your body so that vulnerable parts of your anatomy are protected. The best way to learn about these points of risk in the Kata is to notice points of collision between a practice weapon and your body. Each collision is a warning. You will want to ensure you move in a manner that precludes that same contact from occurring again in the future. Take every incidental contact very seriously and work to ensure it is not repeated.
