This Kata is normally performed using two weapons. You may find it useful at times to practice the Kata using only a single weapon in either your left or right hand.
In the following description we will use some specific terminology to make the intent of the movements clear.
- When referring to the ends of the weapon then:
- The end nearest your hand will be referred to as the “Punya”
- The end furthest from your hand will be referred to as the “Dulo”
- An “Arko” refers to a vertical spin of the weapon. Commonly the weapon spins down and back then upward and forward again. This is accomplished almost entirely by wrist action, but the hand usually opens slightly during the middle portion of the spin when you are first learning. With time you will be able to do a very effective spin without having to open or relax your hand.
At each step in the following discussion the Migi and Hidari weapon movements are discussed in a separate column. This allows the Kata to be performed using one weapon in the right hand, one weapon in the left hand, or a weapon in each hand.
You may perform this Kata with Tambo or Yantok weapons. Yantok are generally preferred because they are lighter, easier to maneuver, less prone to splintering during contact, and, perhaps most importantly, the traditional weapon of choice for Filipino Martial Arts.
The Tensoku Ryu Yantok Kata was developed by Richard Munson as an integral part of the Blue Belt instructional content. The Kata was originally developed in 2014.
