Tensoku Ryu Bo Shodan

This first Bo Kata deals primarily with fundamental blocks, strikes and throws using the Bo weapon. The Kata starts out with fairly simple movements and then slowly evolves into much more complex sequences of movement. Even so, this would still be considered to be a fairly basic Kata. Its primary purpose is to produce familiarity with use of this longer weapon.

The Kata is quite long and is performed along an orthogonal path, primarily following Octagon angles 1, 3, 4, and 2. It then shifts to a more angular approach with movements following angles 8 and 6. Typically the Kata advances toward a given angle, and then retracts back to the center of the octagon along the same line. The series of movements advancing toward and retreating from each octagon angle can be considered a section. Therefore the Kata has six sections. It is easiest to learn this Kata by initially focusing on learning each section in turn. Once a section becomes quite familiar it is time to learn the next section. Trying to learn and remember the Kata as a single form is quite challenging so mentally dividing the Kata into sections helps tremendously with the initial learning process. Later you will want to knit the entire Kata together so that it flows smoothly from one section to the next, but this is best left as an exercise for when you have become very familiar with each individual section.

You will notice that many of the strikes and blocks are defined in terms of the part of the body that is being targeted. It’s time to refresh your knowledge of common Japanese anatomical names. It will also aid you in the performance of the Kata if you focus on the strikes as though there were targeted at the prescribed body part.

In some cases you will see the word “Bo” before a body part strike. This is provided to avoid confusion. A good example is “Bo Empi Uchi.” This term is used to indicate a strike with the Bo to the opponent’s elbow. This is different than Empi Uchi, which is a strike using your elbow.
