Pinan Godan

You should notice a pattern in these Kata that you always look at a direction before moving to that direction. This is done so you do not blindly move into a new direction (who knows what obstacles or opponents you might encounter if you don’t look first).

Whenever turning so that your back will be exposed to a potential opponent you should always have your upper and lower guard positioned to protect you in the event of an incoming strike for the duration of the rotation. Get in the habit of protecting yourself at all times.

Pinan Godan Procedure

The following description utilizes octagon angle reference abbreviations. You may wish to review these abbreviations in our post about The Octagon prior to studying the following procedure.

StepMovement
IchiPerform the traditional opening salutation.
NiPull the left leg inward into a deep Hidari Neko Ashi Dachi as you rotate CCW to F3. Block with a Migi Chudan Uke and Hidari [Glossary]Ura Chudan Uke[/glossary] combination T3, followed immediately by a Migi Ken Tsuki T3.
SanBring your left leg back to your right leg and turn CW to establish a Musubi Dachi F1. Chamber both hands at your right ribs.
YonRotate to the right to establish a deep Migi Neko Ashi Dachi F4. Block with a Hidari Chudan Uke and Migi Ura Chudan Uke combination T4, followed immediately by a Hidari Ken Tsuki T4.
GoBring your right leg back and turn to establish a Musubi Dachi F1. Chamber both hands at your left ribs.
RokuStep R7 to establish a Migi Sochin Dachi and deliver a Morote Migi Ura Chudan Uke T1.
NanaStep L5 to establish a Hidari Zenkutsu Dachi and deliver a Gedan Juji Uke T1. The right arm should be on top of the left arm.
HachiWithout stepping, raise both arms to deliver a Jodan Juji Shuto Uke T1. Leaving the arms in place, rotate the hands so that the left arm moves on top of the right arm. Now invert the right hand so that the palms of both hands overlay one another.
KuWithout stepping and while pressing both palms tightly together, pull both open hands into chamber position on the right side then deliver a Hidari Tettsui Uchi T1.
JuStep R7 into Migi Zenkutsu Dachi and deliver a Migi Oi Tsuki with Kiai T1. Move both hands to guard position.
Ju IchiLook back over your left shoulder T2 as you begin to rotate CCW. During the rotation deliver a Migi Chudan Uke and Migi Mikazuki Geri T2. Following the kick step R8 to establish Migi Sochin Dachi F2 and concurrently deliver Migi Gedan Barai T2.
Ju NiLook back T1 and move the right leg T6 as you establish a Kiba Dachi F4 and strike with a Hidari Chudan Tettsui Uchi to angle 1. Keep the striking arm in its extended position and open the hand.
Ju SanNow deliver a Migi Mikazuki Geri T1 such that the kick impacts your open hand. The hand should be held in place and not moved to intercept the kick. Following the Kick step R7 to form Migi Zenkutsu Dachi F1 while keeping the left arm extended.Strike with a Migi Mae Empi Uchi T1. It is customary that the elbow will strike into the raise left hand.
Ju YonSlide the left leg forward and behind the right leg to establish a Migi Juji Dachi F1 as you form a Morote Migi Ura Chudan Uke T1.
Ju GoLeaving your left fist in contact with your right forearm and without stepping, look T2 then rotate CCW to form Migi Juji Dachi F2. During this rotation deliver a Morote Migi Chudan Uke followed by a Morote Migi Gedan Barai, all without separating your two arms. Allow your center to rotate slightly beyond A2 with the first block and then return to focus at A2 with the second block (in other words, allow your center to flow with the two blocks). You will also want to raise your structure upward slightly for the first block and then lower your structure (by bending your knees) for the second block.
Ju RokuShift your weight onto the left leg and then use this leg to spring your entire body into the air in the direction of angle 2. Land in Migi Juji Dachi F2 as you concurrently deliver a Gedan Juji Uke T2. The right arm should be on top of the left arm.
Ju NanaStep R8 and establish a Migi Zenkutsu Dachi F2 as you deliver a Morote Migi Ura Chudan Uke T2.
Ju HachiRotate CW and step R6 to form Hidari Zenkutsu Dachi F1. Concurrent with this movement strike with Migi Gedan [/glossary]Haito Uchi[/glossary] T1. The open left hand moves to a high front guard position.
Ju KuClose both hands (the right hand is grabbing) and pull the left leg back to establish a Heiko Dachi F7 as the right hand pulls back behind your right shoulder at ear level and your left hand forms a Hidari Gedan Barai T1.
Ni JuOpen both hands and rotate counterclockwise to form a Hidari Juji Dachi F1. Extend the right hand to form a Migi Chudan Shuto Uchi T1 while the left hand guards at your center line.
Ni Ju IchiStep R7 to establish a Migi Zenkutsu Dachi F1. Concurrent with this movement strike with Hidari Gedan Haito Uchi T1. The open right hand moves to a high front guard position.
Ni Ju NiClose both hands (the left hand is grabbing) and pull the right leg back to establish a Heiko Dachi F5 as the left hand pulls back behind your left shoulder at ear level and the right arm forms a Migi Gedan Barai toward T1.
Ni Ju SanSlide the right leg back toward the left to form a Heiko Dachi F1. Yoi. Yame.
