Pinan Sandan

This version of the Pinan Kata series has what at first will seem to be very unusual movements, weight shifts, blocks, strikes, and angles. Once you learn the Kata strive to understand why each of these elements is important and what effect these have on the opponent.

All Octagon angles referenced in the following descriptions and depictions are global octagon angles.

Pinan Sandan Procedure

StepMovement
IchiPerform the traditional opening salutation.
NiLook to angle 3 and then step with the left leg to angle 8 and settle into a Hidari Kokutsu Dachi facing angle 3 while delivering a Hidari Ura Chudan Uke to angle 3.
SanStep forward with the right leg to establish a Heisoku Dachi facing angle 3 and block with a Migi Ura Chudan Uke and Hidari Gedan Barai concurrently toward angle 3. You should shift your weight slightly onto your right leg as you perform these blocks.
YonWithout stepping, deliver a Hidari Chudan Uke and Migi Gedan Barai concurrently to angle 3. You should shift your weight slightly onto your left leg as you perform these blocks.
GoLook to angle 4 and then step with the right leg to angle 6 and settle into a Migi Kokutsu Dachi facing angle 4 while delivering a Migi Ura Chudan Uke to angel 4.
RokuStep forward with the left leg to establish a Heisoku Dachi facing angle 4 and block with a Hidari Ura Chudan Uke and Migi Gedan Barai concurrently toward angle 4. You should shift your weight slightly onto your left leg as you perform these blocks.
NanaWithout stepping, deliver a Migi Ura Chudan Uke and Hidari Gedan Barai concurrently toward angle 4. You should shift your weight slightly onto your right leg as you perform these blocks.
HachiLook to angle 1 and then step with the left leg to angle 5 to establish a Hidari Kokutsu Dachi facing angle 1 while concurrently delivering a Hidari Morote Ura Chudan Uke to angle 1.
KuStep forward with the right leg to angle 7 as you deliver a horizontal Gedan Hidari Shotei Uke to angle 1, then continue forward to establish a Migi Zenkutsu Dachi facing angle 1 and strike with a Chudan Migi Nukite Tsuki toward angle 1.
JuInvert the right hand and grasp your attacker’s wrist as you step to angle 7 with the left leg to establish a Migi Juji Dachi facing angle 2. Your right hand should fold in so it rests against the small of your back and your posture should be erect.
Ju IchiWithout stopping in this location, continue the rotation of the body and step with the left leg to angle 5 to establish a Kiba Dachi facing angle 7. As you land in this stance deliver a Hidari Tettsui Uchi to your attacker’s Jodan level at angle 1.
Ju NiLook to angle 1 and then step to angle 7 with the right leg to establish a Migi Zenkutsu Dachi facing angle 1 as you concurrently deliver a Migi Oi Tsuki with Kiai to angle 1.
Ju SanRotate toward your left ear side and move the left leg back until it is beside the right leg and aligned to angle 4. This movement should establish a Heisoku Dachi facing angle 2. As you complete this rotation place both closed fists on their respective hips such that the elbows point directly away from the body (toward angles 3 and 4). This looks very much like a Superman pose.
Ju YonRaise the right knee toward angle 8 and extend a Migi Mikazuki Geri through angle 2. At the completion of this kick step forward with the right leg to angle 2 and establish a Kiba Dachi facing angle 4.
Ju GoWithout stepping, throw a Migi Mawashi Empi Uke through angle 2 and immediately strike with a Migi Uraken Tsuki through angle 2. Return the right fist to the right hip to reestablish the original elbow position.
Ju RokuBend the left knee in the direction of angle 6 to release the hip joint and then extend a Hidari Mikazuki Geri through angle 2. At the completion of this kick step forward with the left leg to angle 2 and establish a Kiba Dachi facing angle 3.
Ju NanaWithout stepping throw a Hidari Mawashi Empi Uke through angle 2 and immediately strike with a Hidari Uraken Tsuki through angle 2. Return the left fist to the left hip to reestablish the original elbow position.
Ju HachiBend the right knee in the direction of angle 8 to release the hip joint and then extend a Migi Mikazuki Geri through angle 2. At the completion of this kick step forward with the left leg to angel 2 and establish a Kiba Dachi facing angle 4.
Ju KuWithout stepping, throw a Migi Mawashi Empi Uke through angle 2 and immediately strike with a Migi Uraken Tsuki through angle 2. Do not return the right hand to the hip, but instead, open the right hand and raise it to a Chudan guard position.
Ni JuStep forward with the left leg to angle 6 as you use the open right hand as a parry and establish a Hidari Zenkutsu Dachi with Hidari Oi Tsuki toward angle 2.
Ni Ju IchiStep forward with the right foot to establish a Heisoku Dachi facing angle 2.
Ni Ju NiRotate toward your left ear side and move your left foot to angle 4. This should establish a Juji Dachi facing angle 6.
Ni Ju SanDo not stop in this location but continue the rotation to establish a Kiba Dachi facing angle 1. As you set this stance concurrently deliver a Hidari Ushiro Empi Uchi to your opponent’s midsection and a Jodan Migi Ken Tsuki over your left shoulder.
Ni Ju YonShuffle to your right by first moving the right leg and then the left leg to angle 4 as you reestablish a Kiba Dachi facing angle 1. As you set this stance concurrently deliver a Migi Ushiro Empi Uchi to your opponent’s midsection and a Jodan Hidari Ken Tsuki over your right shoulder.
Ni Ju GoSlide the right foot in the direction of the left foot to establish a Heisoku Dachi facing angle 1.
Ni Ju RokuPerform the closing salutation. Yame.
